NOTE DE SYNTHÈSE - Août 2022

Avortement aux États-Unis : remise en cause du droit ou prise de conscience à l'international ?

On Friday, June 24, 2022, in a historic U-turn, the United States Supreme Court buried the federal right to abortion by reversing the Roe v Wade decision which had guaranteed the right of American women to have an abortion for nearly 'a half-century. Following this, some States took the opportunity to immediately ban Voluntary Interruptions of Pregnancy (IVG) on their soil. Currently, nearly twenty states prohibit it and the ban on abortion is in progress in other states. Among the nine judges of the Supreme Court, making up the highest American court and being appointed for life, five of them voted to ban abortion. This decision of the Supreme Court resounded on a world scale: demonstrations and positions are taken by the thousands. What impact can be expected at a time when the influence across the Atlantic is resounding in many countries? Are we facing a decline in women's rights internationally or, on the contrary, an awareness of the fragility of this right?
